Grandma Calla’s Fruit Cake

Ingredients

  • 2 Pounds Chopped Seedless Raisins
  • 1 Pound Cleaned Currants
  • 1 Cup Chopped Citron
  • 4 Cups Flour
  • 1 Heaping Teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 Tablespoon Cinnamon
  • 1 Level Teaspoon Cloves
  • 1 Tablespoon Nutmeg
  • 1 Cup Sugar
  • 1 Cup Sorghum Syrup
  • 1 Cup Shortening
  • 1 Cup Strong Cold Coffee

Instructions

  • Mix together fruit with 1/2 cup flour. In separate bowl, combine remaining flour, baking soda, and spices.
  • Blend together, sugar, sorghum syrup, shortening and coffee. Add dry ingredients until just moistened. Bake slowly (300 to 325 degrees) for an hour or longer. Makes 2 cakes.
